"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit."
In contemporary Christianity, we usually define the "spirit" of a man as his/her "essence." While the "soul" is thought of as his/her mind (will and emotions). The spirit of the person is where the Holy Spirit dwells. It is the place in his/her thinking where Faith is manifested and empowered. The soul (mind), on the other hand, is all about attitudes, logic, feelings and beliefs, and the place where the Christian battles the sins in his/her life, e.g. addictions, doubt, etc. God's purpose is for man's spirit to grow, instead of being driven by the soul. So, the key to growing and fighting the temptations and sins of the mind (soul) is to be fed with the things of God. Therefore, Bible Study is an essential element in order to become familiar with and follow the will of God.
